CHALLENGE YOUR FAMILY

         Challenge your family

Only the 2,8% of the Earth's water is fresh water and the rest (salty water) cannot be used for daily actions as having a shower or washing the dishes and we MUST save it with actions and rules.

How we can do it? The answer is more simple that we believe, from our homes. And that's why we decided to challenge our families to save water in our daily actions. And these are the tips and rules to obtain that.

TIPS AND RULES:
- Look at buying new appliances his water and energy consumption.
- Wash up for less than 5 minutes, you will save more than 3.500 l per month.
- Turn off the tap while you're shaving. Also if we want to clean our cutter we should fill the sink with water, you'll save almost 400 l of the week.
- Have a shower in less time possible.
- Reuse the water that the shower spend while we're waiting for the water to get warm, for example (water for washing)

This is how we helped to save water in our houses.

WATER FACTS

- Only the 1 % of the Earth's water can be consumed by population.
- The 71% of the Earth is covered by water, only 29% is covered by continents.
-The 96.5% of the Earth water is salt water, and only 3.5% is fresh water. We must take care of this small percentage!
-The 69% of the Earth water is frozen, if we imagine that these water melt it rises up 2.7 kilometers.

-Our families reduce 1.2m³ the consume of water in our houses in one month thanks to all the tricks that we use an we gives to you. In the past we expend 2000 litres per month and nowadays we expend 1200 litres per month.

FRESH WATER WATCH

We sampled one balate passing through a protected wetland of the town, the pond Suarez.
We have built a device to catch water from the bottom and then observe the laboratory. We have also built a Secchi disk to measure water turbidity.
We have taken water samples and we have measured the amount of nitrate and phosphate.
We need to return more days to confirm the status of water. The next day, the manager will teach us to take water samples and we will help identify bird species.

Suarez´s Pond

The small lagoon complex formed by marshlands, waterlogged areas and different pools that constitute the Nature Reserve of Suarez's Pond, the so-called "Charca de Suárez" in Spanish, make this place a real oasis for nature and wildlife. Located in the hearth of Motril lowlands, its present high level of conservation has been achieved as the result of selfless effort coming from some public institutions and environmental groups such as BUXUS ...
A visit to this privileged site means to enjoy one of the most important areas for birdwatching on the Iberian Peninsula, whose rich and varied birdlife comprises more than 160 different species. Within the 92 species of birds currently considered in threatened status across the length and breadth of the Andalusian region, 51 of them are possible to see on this quite rightly protected zone..

FASHIONABLE WATER

We have studied that  it is necessary a lot of water to make our clothes. we have decided to transform our  old clothes into fashion ones to save water.. because we can wear these clothes   again and we don’t need to buy more.
We have done a powerpoint  and we have explained  our mission to our classmates. Besides, we have carried  our transformed clothes to the class and we have explained how we have made them.
Our designs have liked to our classmates very much!!!!!!

MAKING A GROUNDWATER MODEL

Groundwater is the water we drink and the water that grows our food. It is found underground in the cracks and spaces between sand and soil. These underground formations are called aquifers.
1.  OBJETIVE
Learn groundwater concepts by building a model aquifer. Its sometimes easier to understand groundwater if you can “see” it.
2.  TASK
Makes a groundwater model
3.  ITEMS NEEDED
a.    Three clear containers
b.    Sand or gravel
c.    Clay
d.    Water
e.    Pipette
f.    Permanent pens of different colours: blue, red and black
4.  PROCESS
Now, we are going to learn about which are conditions to form groundwater.
Take 3 clear cups:
A.The first cup is filled by a waterproof layer such as clay, secondly with a permeable layer such as gravel or sand. Add water filling the cup half full. Try to extract water with a pipette at the bottom of the  cup.

Ø  What happens?___________________________________________
Try to extract water with a pipette at the middle of the  cup.
Ø  What happens?___________________________________________
Ø  Where the water go?_________________________________________
Ø  Has an aquifer formed?  ______________________________________
Now, continue filling the cup with water above the top of the gravel.
Ø  What happens?______________________________________________
_______________________________________________________
Ø  What type of water has formed now?_______________________
B. The second cup is filled by a permeable layer and on top an impermeable layer. Add water filling the cup half full.

Ø  Where the water go?_____________________________________
Ø  Has an aquifer formed? _____________________________________
Ø  What type of water has formed now?________________________

C. The third cup is filled by a permeable layer but in this case with an inclination. On top you put an waterproof layer but showing part of the  layer down. Add water filling the cup half full.
Try to extract water with a pipette at the bottom of the  cup.
Ø  What happens?___________________________________________
Try to extract water with a pipette at the middle of the cup.
Ø  What happens?___________________________________________
Ø  Where the water go?_____________________________________
Ø  Has an aquifer formed? _____________________________________
Ø  What type of water has formed now?________________________
RESULTS
Ø  Mark with a permanent pen the saturation zone, water table and unsaturation zone only on the cups where is formed an aquifer.
Water table in red             -------

Saturation zone in blue                   Unsaturation zone in green

Draw the model made and locate impermeable zone, aquifer, saturation zone, unsaturation zone and water table.

CONCLUSIONS
Write the conditions to form an aquifer_______________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Explain how the Suarez´s ponds have formed. __________________________

What happens when humans contaminate or deplete our aquifers?
